The Governor-elect will be hosting free events in communities across the state of Kansas in order to include every region of the Sunflower State in the 2019 inaugural festivities. Below are the event details.
Day of Service Sedgwick County – Food Bank (January 12, 10am-12pm)
In Wichita, community members are volunteering at the Kansas Food Bank, which provides pre-assembled bags of food free of charge to schools across the state of Kansas. The schools distribute the food to chronically hungry children in backpacks every Friday. Volunteers will fill bags for the Food-4-Kids Program.
Please dress warmly and wear closed toed shoes. Volunteers should be over the age of 7. No food or drink is allowed in the warehouse.

In Wichita, community members are organizing a food drive at the Advanced Learning Library in Wichita to support the Wichita Family Crisis Center, which provides comprehensive services for victims of sexual and domestic violence and sexual exploitation. Volunteers will bring donations of non-perishable food items, particularly shelf-stable microwavable meals.

Day of Service Shawnee County – Food Drive (January 6-12)
In Topeka, community members are contributing to a food drive for Let’s Help, Inc and Doorstep, Inc., organizations that assist individuals and families to break the cycle of poverty and attain self-sufficiency. Volunteers will bring donations of non-perishable food items, particularly shelf-stable microwavable meals.
Beginning Sunday, January 6, you can drop off your items at the following locations:

In Topeka, community members are volunteering at Harvesters, a regional food bank that provides food and related household products to more than 620 not-for-profit agencies including emergency food pantries, community kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes and others. Volunteers will participate in sorting and re-packaging donated product.

Day of Service Johnson County – Clothing Drive (January 12, 12-6pm)
In Overland Park, the Johnson County Democrats are hosting a clothing drive to benefit the Shawnee Mission School District. Bring donations to the Johnson County Democrats’ office on or before January 12. Please only donate new, unused clothing and shoes. Cash donations are welcome and will be used to purchase more clothing. Beginning at noon on the 12th, volunteers will sort and box the donations. Bring refreshments and watch the Chiefs game with us!

Day of Service Reno County – Community Discussion on Food Insecurity (January 12, 12-1:30pm)
In Hutchinson, community members recognize there needs to be an important discussion about food insecurity, which is why we invite you to join us to learn more about the issues and what you can do. We will be joined by food policy expert Joey Hentzler, Director of Advocacy at Kansas Appleseed. We will also be providing refreshments and lunch. We also encourage folks to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the Reno County Food Bank.

Day of Service Leavenworth County – Food and Clothing Drive (January 13, 1:30-3:30pm)
In Leavenworth, community members are donating to The Army Community Service (ACS) program, which provides US Army personnel and their families with programs and services that promote self-reliance, resilience, and stability during war and peace.
For this service project, volunteers will collect winter clothing for the ACS program on Fort Leavenworth so their staff may distribute items to families in need. Monetary donations (preferably in the form of gift cards) are welcome. Acceptance and presentation of the donations will be at the Center on Sunday, January 13th from 1:30p to 3:30p.

Day of Service Saline County – “Laundry Love” (January 12, 3-5pm)
In Salina, community members are donating to Salina Shares’ “Laundry Love” initiative. This project arranges gift bags with items like laundry detergent, dryer sheets, quarters, cleaning supplies, towels, and personal hygiene products for families in need.
Beginning on Saturday, January 5, we will begin collecting donations in laundry baskets located at Ad Astra, our locally-owned bookstore and coffee shop. On Saturday, January 12 at 3pm, we will meet at Ad Astra to enjoy some refreshments and deliver the laundry baskets to Salina Shares.

Day of Service Finney County – Benefit Coffee (January 12, 10am-2pm)
In Garden City, participants will be gathering for a benefit coffee in support of three local organizations: Mosaic, the Finney County Humane Society, and Oasis of Peace.
Mosaic is a faith-based organization that supports the needs, goals, and dreams of people with intellectual disabilities. We will be collecting supplies and donations for their group homes.
The Finney County Humane Society’s mission is to prevent cruelty to animals, to relieve suffering among animals, and to promote the extension of humane education. In addition the normal sheltering responsibilities, the Humane Society provides medical care, foster care, and enrichment to animals in their shelter. We will be selling tickets to their annual fundraiser.
Oasis of Peace is a shelter offering support for women escaping from sex-trafficking. We will be collecting grocery vouchers and donations for the shelter.

Douglas County Day of Service – Supply Drive (January 8, 5:30-7pm and January 12, 10am-12pm)
In Lawrence, the Douglas County Democrats are hosting a supply drive in support of the Willow Domestic Violence Center. The Center works to restore the health and safety of survivors of family and domestic violence by providing free and confidential safety, education, and advocacy services. For this project, we will collect personal items for donation, such as gift cards, personal hygiene products, laundry detergent, underwear, socks, washcloths, and baby care products. Cash donations are also welcome.
We will begin collecting items at a Happy Hour gathering on January 8 from 5:30p-7p at the Boulevard Grill at the Doubletree. We will host a second gathering at the same location on January 12th from 10 am until 12pm.

Ellis County Day of Service – Park Cleanup (January 12, 11am-1pm)
In Hays, community members are partnering with a local Girl Scout Troop to clean up the Aubel Bickle Park. The park features features a family shelter house, walking trails, a multipurpose playground area, volleyball courts, off-street parking, open play areas, picnic tables, basketball court, practice ball fields, and skateboard park.
Volunteers will also be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Community Assistance Center. The Center assists low-income families and individuals, transients, the homeless, and disaster victims by providing them with food, clothing, and household items.

Crawford County Day of Service – Collection Drive (January 8-16)
Crawford County will be hosting a supply drive benefiting the Children’s Advocacy Center, an organization that works to promote excellence in child abuse response and prevention. Every child that is brought to the CAC receives a bag full of comfort items that they can take home with them. For this project, community members will be collecting items for the bags, such as blankets, coloring books, art supplies, toys, and personal hygiene items. Riley County Day of Service – Collection Drive (January 12, 10am-3pm)
Manhattan community members will support the Flint Hills Volunteer Center in a collection drive that will benefit the USD 383 FIT Closet and the Colmery O’Neil VA Hospital in Topeka.
The FIT Closet and Clothing Exchange is USD383’s means of providing many of the necessary essentials (e.g., school supplies, shoes, clothing, coats, toiletries, hygiene products, laundry detergent) so children can attend class and integrate successfully. The FIT Closet primarily serves homeless students and their families, but has also opened its doors to assist other students and families in need. They serve families struggling with daily living expenses, migrant students and their families, students in Foster Care, and children with a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
Since 1946, the staff of the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center has been serving veterans since 1946 as part of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System (VAEKHCS).
Volunteers will be collecting items in shifts at Hy-Vee from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, January 12th. Items may also be dropped off until January 31st at the Flint Hills Volunteer Center Office.

Riley County Day of Service – Community Meal (January 12, 5-7:30pm)
In Manhattan, community members are volunteering to help serve a Saturday evening meal at the First United Methodist Church. This event supports The Common Table, an organization whose mission is to organize and expand the Manhattan, Kansas community meal program so that meals are available 7 days a week. Volunteers should use the west entrance to the fellowship hall (it is a concrete staircase behind the large air conditioning unit). Please visit this link to sign up for a shift.

Day of Service Wyandotte County – Community Building Cleanup (January 12, 9am-12pm)
There is currently a critical shortage of grocery stores in northeast Kansas City, Kansas. In order to raise awareness about this shortage, the Wyandotte County Young Democrats are leading a project to clean out a vacant storefront in hopes that the space will one day be occupied by a grocery store. Volunteers will meet at the storefront.
